Or, if your boat has a full racing certificate where all these measures will already have been taken, you can copy these from there. The luff is the leading edge of the sail. The leech is the trailing edge. The foot is the bottom edge. Jibs and Genoas have a Luff Perpendicular (LP) that is the perpendicular distance from the luff to the clew. Headsails are usually called Genoa I, II or III (from largest to smallest, a Genoa III can also be called a working jib). Which may be similar to a \u201cblade jib\u201d or a \u201cSolent jib\u201d, all of which are headsails with very little or no overlap beyond the mast. The LP measure determines the amount of overlap, given in percentage, hence the terms like, for example, \u201c130 percent Genoa\u201d (which would overlap by 30% of LP), or \u201c100 per cent\u201d which would be in effect non-overlapping. If all of this sounds a bit confusing, don\u2019t worry. You will need a <strong>sports type soft reel tape measure with a loop at the end<\/strong> so that you can attach it to a halyard. And it will need to be long enough for the size of boat \u2013 for example, for a 37-footer, the maximum length measured (\u201cI\u201d) was 48.23 feet. Your old sails may be blown out and stretched, so will very probably not fit perfectly any more. Or they might not have been made to the best possible design in the first place. A soft reel type tape measure has a loop of some kind at the end which is practical to attach it to the halyards. Note that we also offer pre-made spinnakers or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollytasker.com\/en\/our-sails\/downwind\/ready-made-code-c\/\">Code C sails<\/a>, but to choose the right size for your boat, you will also need to know your maximum luff length (see below).<\/p><p>You will again need a long tape measure for this, which can be attached to the spinnaker halyard and hoisted all the way up. Lock off the halyard\/tape measure and measure the distance down to the deck \u2013 if the mast sits on the coachroof, then take the distance down to the side deck.<\/p><p>Then, leaving the halyard locked, take the bottom end of the tape measure <strong>to the point where the tack<\/strong> of the asymmetrical spinnaker or Code sail will be attached. This will be outside the pulpit either <strong>on an anchor roller fitting<\/strong> or, if you have one,<strong> on the short bowsprit<\/strong> which is used for this purpose. <strong>This is the max luff length measurement.<\/strong><\/p><h3>Measuring the \u201cJ\u201d and \u201cC\u201d Lengths<\/h3><p>Now take down the tape measure and use it to determine the horizontal distance from the point where the tack of the asymmetrical spinnaker or Code sail will be attached to the front end of the mast. This is the \u201cJ\u201d measurement for your spinnaker or Code sail.<\/p><p>For a symmetrical spinnaker, this will also be the length of the <strong>spinnaker pole<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Leave the tape fixed to the tack point on the bow or bowsprit and measure the horizontal distance aft to the point where the spinnaker sheeting block is attached. This is the<strong> sheeting distance<\/strong> (\u201cC\u201d in our measurement form).<\/p><h3>Which Furler?<\/h3><p>If the sail is a furling type, either an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollytasker.com\/en\/our-sails\/downwind\/custom-spinnaker\/\">asymmetrical spinnaker<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollytasker.com\/en\/our-sails\/downwind\/ready-made-code-c\/\">Code C<\/a> or similar, we can offer the best solution for a reliable furling system. In that case the tack of the sail should be clear and above of the pulpit, making the luff shorter than if setting the sail from a bowsprit.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<strong>height of your mast above deck<\/strong>\u00a0gives a good indication for the right luff length of your Code C sail. If set from deck, the luff length should be about the same as the mast height above deck. If set from a bowsprit, add the extra length to this measurement.<\/p><p>It is\u00a0<strong>more precise to measure the luff length by hoisting a measuring tape<\/strong>\u00a0with the spinnaker halyard and taking the bottom end to the position where the tack of the Code C sail should later be. Deduct from this the required measurement of the furler drum and top swivel plus some stretch, which is usually about 60 centimetres.<\/p><p><strong>For example<\/strong>: If the max luff measurement is 14 metres, the luff should be 13.40 metres \u2013 or the nearest size under.
