Rolly Tasker Sails at National Sail Supply is the Florida branch of one of the oldest, largest and most experienced sailmakers world-wide. We are based just North of Tampa, near the sailing centres of Clearwater and Saint Petersburg, also not far from the global yachting hub Fort Lauderdale and the delightful cruising grounds of Florida’s West Coast and the Florida Keys to the very South.
MEET DIRK SHARLAND
When he was living in Phuket in the early 1990s, Dirk Sharland met Rolly Tasker as the latter was just about to set up the world’s largest purpose-built sail-loft there. Rolly needed English-speaking help so Dirk came on board then and there – and stayed on ever since. Dirk, not a professional sailmaker at the beginning, was treated to an intense, six-day-a-week intensive hands-on training on the job that lasted a full three years. The first-hand knowledge that Dirk gained from Rolly and his staff in modern sailmaking, but also traditional craftsmanship as well as the day-to-day running of a huge loft were to become invaluable in the future.
MOVE TO THE U.S.
Being a global crossroads for bluewater sailors, many American yachts visit Phuket and there is a steady flow of visiting sailors from all over the world coming to the Rolly Tasker loft. A recurring topic among the visiting Americans was: “You know, you ought to open a retail outlet for these sails in the US. With this excellent quality and the incredible pricing, it would have to be a success!”. So, finally, Dirk moved with his family to Florida. In January 1996, he set up his own business, National Sail Supply, which is a big dealer for Rolly Tasker Sails in the US. In fact, Dirk and his team have shipped Rolly Tasker Sails to every state in the US, as well as further afield to South America, the Caribbean, and even as far away as Saipan and Minsk, Belarus.
