Cruising and performance catamarans have different types of headsails for upwind sailing, mainly depending on the type of rig and mainsail and also according to the owner’s personal preferences. Cats with a large and powerful mainsail may only need a small blade or self-tacking jib to increase flow over the mainsail. Others, especially cruising boats with less sail area, might need a Genoa to deliver upwind drive.
A self-tacking jib is very easy to use but may not be as effective as other headsails, as it is entirely non-overlapping and also has a reduced sail area. It needs an effective traveler before the mast and may also rely on short, possibly also vertical battens (to enable furling) to support the tall leech.
Many cruising Catamarans and Trimarans have a less powerful main and will rely on a furling Genoa to deliver upwind performance. This sail will normally be designed and specified as a mid-range Genoa, suitable to also be sailed part-furled when the wind increases. For the part-furled Genoa to still be effective upwind, it is important to use very low stretch cloth or laminates and design the sail with appropriate luff foam tapes to flatten the profile when part-furled.
All standard headsails will be made in the proven crosscut design from durable and strong Dacron sailcloth to our demanding offshore or ocean specifications. For high-performance sailing, more advanced sail design in sophisticated materials such as cruising laminates are also available.
