READY MADETOP-DOWN FURLING Asymmetrical Spinnaker

EASY HANDLING DOWNWIND SAIL

This exciting new sail was developed to combine maximum downwind power with the ultimate ease in handling.

Those of you who already use our Code C reaching sail will know from experience how easy a specialised downwind furling sail is to deploy and retrieve when also combined with the correct furling gear.

So what’s the difference to the Code C?

Our new Furling Asymmetrical Spinnaker has up to 15 percent more area than the Code C and its design allows you to sail lower angles downwind – the same as a traditional running Asymmetrical Spinnaker which you can sail as low as 165 degrees.

Set when furled, this sail is perfect for short-handed use and simply unfurls and re-furls at ease when required. No more spinnaker poles or spinnaker socks required.

To have an asymmetric spinnaker that can be set while furled and then simply unfurled from the cockpit is an innovation for this kind of sail. Up until now, this would have traditionally been set from a sailbag on the foredeck or with a “snuffer”.

Top Down Furling Spinnaker

Top-Down Furling. Powerful but easy

To be able to sail deeper downwind with efficiency, the sail must be designed to be full in profile and to move the luff to the upwind side of the boat’s centreline, out from behind the mainsail. Such a sail would not be possible to furl on a traditional “bottom-up” furler. This works well on the Code C sail which has a straight luff similar to a Genoa, but the curved luff of the Asymmetrical Spinnaker cannot be furled in this way.

To overcome this problem, the sail is hoisted with an “artificial luff line”, known as a torsion or furling cable, which is a strong cable around which the sail is furled. More importantly, the cable transfers the furling impetus from the furler to the head of the sail, from where it is then effectively furled – from the top downwards – resulting in a controlled and safe furling manoeuvre.

Downwind Sailing Angles

This sail is most effective from 120 to 165 degrees true wind angle which makes it a very versatile cruising sail.

Ready Made for Best Value

At Rolly Tasker Sails, we always strive to offer the very best value for your money. As with the Code C, we can best achieve this by offering ready-made Furling Asymmetrical Spinnakers in many different sizes, suitable for yachts from 30 to 50ft feet in overall length. These sails are made from high quality spinnaker nylon, carefully manufactured with details that are specifically designed for the top-down furling system. These include strong but highly flexible corner patches for a smoother furl, specialised soft head and tack attachments, strong leech tapes and much more to produce the ultimate specialised top-down furling spinnaker.

Choose Your Size

The size of the Furling Asymmetrical Spinnaker is determined the length of the furling cable in a straight line from the head to the tack of the sail, in other words, from the masthead halyard attachment to the tack attachment on deck.  As the sail needs to be flown outside the foretriangle and the forestay, this measurement would be from the mast halyard point to the tack which would be on a short bowsprit or anchor roller outside the regular foretriangle.  Once this measurement is known, you can pick your size from the table below.  Do not forget, however, to deduct a short length for the height of the furling drum and the top swivel from the overall length.  If your length is between two sizes of the ready-made Asymmetrical Spinnaker, then choose the next one down.
