The Asymmetrical Spinnaker is ideal for multihulls. Setting, handling and dousing is safe and easy on the stable platform of the multihull deck, especially so with the Snuffer sock. The Asymmetrical Spinnaker can be set and flown without a spinnaker boom, which further simplifies handling. The sail is best used from about 100 degrees off the wind to straight downwind. In lighter winds, it can even be sailed wing-on-wing with the main. The sail is large and powerful and will certainly boost your downwind performance in winds of up to 16 knots TWS.
Using a sock for setting and dousing the sail makes it very easy. The sock is hoisted and only then the sail pulled out, which is especially easy when done in the wind shadow of the mainsail. It can easily be done single-handed. The same applies to dousing the sail – release the sheet, pull the sock over the sail and then take the resulting “tube” down onto the deck. This is necessary, in contrast to a furled Code Sail or Screecher which can be left furled and hoisted in front of the forestay in calmer conditions.
Like mentioned above, one difference is that the sail cannot stay hoisted in the sock. Also, unlike a Code Sail or Screecher which are made for close reaching, the downwind Asymmetrical Spinnaker will not increase apparent wind so is also easier to handle in this respect. However, it can only be used for downwind sailing and not for close reaching at tight angles to the wind.
Our range of cruising spinnakers are made to last, from high quality cloth with 3step stich seams, extra strong leech tapes and corner patches for your peace of mind. The sock for hoisting and dousing makes handling very easy. The sail will add flexibility, speed, and confidence to your sailing. It is one of the most popular sails on multihulls, powerful but still very manageable without a large crew.
I have used several sails from Rolly Tasker and was always pleased with their construction and performance. Our main and jib for our Lagoon 440 Cat (tall rig) are well-constructed offshore capable sails. Excellent reinforcement and hand sewn chafe leathers. And the sails are priced well below many other options. 60,000 miles later, the mainsail has done its job. Probably could have gotten many more miles out of it if we didn’t sail quite so aggressively. We have had our cruising Cat at speeds in the mid to upper teens, with our top speed of 19.2 knots in 30+kts. I ordered the same sail again and can’t wait for it to arrive. The jib is still performing well, and I expect it will go another 10,000 miles.
